Between States of Being

This primer investigates the many spatial configurations used when designing for funerary practices.

The work is organized per the spatial and social arrangements that offer differing degrees of bodily freedoms expressed in death, before dissipating into the surrounding environment. From the tending to memory done by a Missouri community to the Zoroastrian practice of excarnation carried out in a reclusive forest, the primer demonstrates a gradient of freedoms and commemorative/bodily permanence for the deceased and for the publics maintaining their memories.
In doing so, the project is illuminating the pervasiveness of death within the public sphere and its many forms beyond the socialized image.

Arguably, religious, cultural, and social layers are intrinsically linked to these questions; however, the drawings begin to investigate different formal gestures and funerary rituals to help reify the many bodily expressions post-mortem and ways to design for said expressions.
