Fields

Fields are open. Fields are ground cover. Fields carry meanings or qualities from the natural environment. Fields are demarcated yet not fully controlled. Fields are not abstract, but rather very real.

This primer explores the field as a symbolic yet concrete area which creates a foil to urbanity. As such, particular attention is placed on fields which exist in urban or peri-urban areas, making their presence felt as suspensions to urban norms. All such fields contain an element of chance: their vegetation, their activities, or their occupations might not adhere to expected rules. The goal is to show how such fields—as a particular kind of landscape—carries forth a particular association to that which exceeds the rules and norms of the city.
