Empowering the Non-Designers

Non-designers typically occupy the position of users in a design project. However, involving non-designers in the completion of a project can introduce a unique dynamic. By documenting how non-designers use a space in unpredictable ways, a sense of randomness can be incorporated. Utilizing the skills of non-designers can add a cultural and crafted dimension to the project. Linking the economic income of non-designers to the funding of the project and involving them in its maintenance and operation can lead to better community integration.

The diverse perspectives and skills of non-designers can contribute a fresh, non-cliched element to the project. Their participation in the design and use of the space allows for self-expression without requiring any specialized training. Collaborative design or construction can bring people together and generate a collective sense of ownership. Ultimately, this can result in a newfound public freedom.
